One of the most common questions we hear at Gabriel Fine Jewelry is simple: what is the difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond? The answer might surprise you.
They Are Both Real Diamonds
A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant, a fake, or a substitute. It is a real diamond — identical to a natural diamond in every meaningful way. Same chemical composition (pure carbon), same crystal structure, same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), same optical properties. The only difference is where it came from.
Natural Diamonds: A Geological Event
Natural diamonds form deep within the earth's mantle, roughly 140 to 200 kilometres below the surface, under extreme heat (around 1,300°C) and pressure (725,000 psi). The process takes between one and three and a half billion years. Diamonds are then carried to the surface by volcanic eruptions through structures called kimberlite pipes, where they are eventually mined.
Only about one carat of diamond is recovered for every 250 tonnes of ore — which is why natural diamonds are rare, and why that rarity is reflected in their price.
Lab-Grown Diamonds: The Same Process, Accelerated
Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment using one of two processes: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT), which replicates the conditions deep within the earth, or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD), which grows diamonds from a carbon-rich gas. Both methods start with a small diamond seed crystal and grow a full diamond over a period of weeks.
The result is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond. Even trained gemologists cannot tell them apart with the naked eye — specialist equipment is required.
Certification
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can be graded and certified by GIA and IGI — the world's most respected gemological laboratories. Certificates cover cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. At Gabriel Fine Jewelry, all our certified pieces come with their grading certificate.
Which Should You Choose?
The right choice depends on what matters to you.
If the story of a stone matters — its geological age, its rarity, the fact that no other diamond on earth is quite like it — then a natural diamond is the choice. Natural diamonds also tend to hold value better over time.
If you want the maximum carat weight and brilliance for your budget, a lab-grown diamond is an exceptional choice. You can typically get a significantly larger or higher-quality stone for the same price, with the same certification and the same physical properties.
Both are real. Both are beautiful. We are happy to guide you — just get in touch.
